Beginning in 2012 BBB began receiving reports from consumers who had been contacted via online dating sites by an individual claiming to want to establish a relationship with the consumer before eventually asking the consumer for money to pay for tariffs needed to receive an international shipment of computers. Our research indicates the scammer has gone by at least four different names and claimed to own at least four different computer stores. For more information please see the following reports: Brad Computers Co., J&M Computers Co., and Bran Computers Co.
BBB is warning consumers to be wary if they find themselves in similar situations. Scammers sometimes use a technique known as "cat fishing" or a "romance scam" by which they gain a victim's trust by first establishing a romantic relationship before ultimately asking for money. For more information about this type of scam, watch our Torch Talk video.
