- Additional Info:In June 2019, BBB received consumer inquiry alleging that this company contacts consumers to offer cheek swab kits to test for cancer.
Since September 2021, BBB started to receive complaints and Scam Tracker reports filed against Genetic Advocates.
Consumers have reported they are receiving unwanted phone calls and/or unauthorized testing kits, claiming to be ordered by their provider but they are not. The letters are also fraudulently using DNA Genotek's name, who is not affiliated with this business and has put an alert on their website to warn consumers that scammers are offering free genetic testing to Medicare beneficiaries to obtain their Medicare information for identity theft or fraudulent billing purposes.
BBB attempted to contact Genetic Advocates about the complaint activity, however BBB received mail returned as undeliverable, and found the phone number is disconnected. BBB was not able to locate any new information.
Consumers should always confirm that tests has been ordered by their primary care doctor, that it's covered by their plan, and that it's medically necessary. Never give out your Social Security, Medicare/health plan numbers or banking information to someone you do not know. In addition, never consent to any lab tests without your doctors' orders. Consumers should call the customer service number on the back of their insurance ID cards to discuss coverage or other concerns. Medicare resources regarding the National Coverage Determination (NCD) for the testing is located on CMS.gov.
