Government Actions

Gov. Action
The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the government's allegations, which have not yet been proven.

On July 14, 2014, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper filed suit in Wake County Superior Court against American Kitchen Corporation and its owners Robert Selfors and Tyler Justin Sheets seeking to ban them from offering home repair or home improvement services to North Carolina homeowners. Cooper is also asking the court to require them to pay refunds to consumers who paid for work that was never completed. The matter is pending. For more details go to http://www.ncdoj.gov/News-and-Alerts/News-Releases-and-Advisories/Press-Releases/AG-Cooper-goes-after-owners-of-American-Kitchen.aspx.

Consumers with unfinished kitchens who have not already done so are encouraged to contact the North Carolina Attorney General's Office to file complaint with their office and also file complaint with your Better Business Bureau.

Important Information

Customer Complaint

June 20, 2014

Complaints received by BBB indicate a pattern of complaints whereby consumers paid large percentages of their contracted price towards the completion of a kitchen remodel and are left with significantly incomplete work.

Between June 12, 2014 and June 20, 2014, BBB has received 16 total complaints regarding American Kitchen. The majority of these complaints indicate that the company has gone out of business without prior notice to their customers. The majority of these complaints indicate consumers paid 50-95% of their contract value and are left with significantly incomplete work and non-functioning kitchens.

BBB has begun an investigation into the company to determine if the company has closed for good with plans to file bankruptcy or if they plan to restructure and reopen to complete pending contracts. The primary company phone line has been disconnected and BBB's calls to principal officers of the company have not been returned. BBB made a site visit to the known company address on Monday, June 16, 2014, and found the company's doors padlocked. Items inside the building seen through the glass doors appeared to be packed for moving. The lights were off and there was no one present at the company's office.

Based on consumer complaints and BBB's investigation thus far, BBB believes this company is out of business.

BBB recommends consumers with incomplete contracts continue to file complaint with BBB, as BBB will continue to pursue complaints against American Kitchen until a bankruptcy action can be confirmed. Consumers with incomplete contracts may also wish to file complaint with the North Carolina Attorney General's office. Consumers with incomplete contracts may wish to seek legal counsel to evaluate their options moving forward.

BBB will continue to update this post as new information comes to light.
