Government Actions
United States of America Department of Transportation v. American Airlines, Inc.
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.
On August 28, 2023, American Airlines, Inc. entered into a Consent Order with the Department of Transportation. The Consent Order settles allegations American Airlines, Inc., violated the Department's Tarmac Delay Rule, prohibitions against unfair and deceptive practices, and the requirement to adhere to a carrier's tarmac delay contingency plan for lengthy tarmac delays for 43 domestic flights. American Airlines permitted the 43 flights to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours without providing passengers on those flights an opportunity to deplane and also failed to have sufficient resources to implement its contingency plan for lengthy tarmac delays. The order direct American to cease and desist from future similar violations and asses American Airlines Inc. with $4.1 million in civil penalties.
