We are building a small home in West Hants. We checked well logs in the area and there are plenty drilled wells around with good water so we contacted a few drillers, got quotes back, and went with Brewster Well Drillers. Before drilling, I asked about gypsum and was told that "there's some around but shouldn't be an issue". If they had started drilling and stopped when gypsum was hit, called and told us, informed us of the risks of continuing to drill through gypsum or allowed us time to do our research, I would have paid them, dug a well, and been sad about our bad luck. They hit gypsum at 220ft. They drilled 440ft. 220ft of drilling through something they should have known was gypsum and should have known they would not get much/any water from it. They did not inform us that they had hit gypsum until after the drilling. The owner stated that "it's really hard to tell the difference between limestone and gypsum", which is, from our research, untrue. Our well report has no mention of limestone and there are ways of telling the difference of limestone and gypsum on site without much effort. The invoice that was sent to us was $23,290 + HST when we did not have a clear path forward and had just drilled an empty well. Nearly all the info we gathered was from researching ourselves. Little guidance was offered. We made the case to them that we should not be charged for the 220ft of completely unnecessary drilling done through the gypsum, that the invoice should be $14,490+HST. If they had agreed to that, I would not be writing this. They offered to reduce the price by $4150, (cost to hydrofrack). We paid today just to let the situation die. In conclusion, be very mindful of this company if you are drilling anywhere in areas that are known for gypsum, as they either do not know how to spot it or do not care to try. I really hope that I help someone in the future avoid this situation.
