    Ongoing issues with a storage facility I've rented for the last year including the owner leaving my unit unlocked for over a week, and most recently a flood on the property (due to lack of proper maintenance) has flooded my unit, damaging most of my property. I notified the owner and requested assistance moving my stuff to another space that isnt flooded but she is refusing assistance to salvage my possessions and has demanding i remove my stuff. Im homeless amd i have no money to resolve this issue. Please help.

    Business response

    29/03/2022

    On March 22, 2022 I received a text message from Ms. ***** stating her unit was flooded, I happened to be away but called the property manager to go take a look at the storage units to see what kind of damages there were.  He text back with pictures stating the water was nowhere near the units and there was proper drainage for the water to run away from the units. He also opened a couple of units on the back side that had no water damage.
    What he feels happened was the snow came off the roof in the mild weather we had that week then it rained.  The water could not drain into the sand as the ground is still frozen so some water seeped into her unit and then the weather turned cold and it froze. There is less than an inch of ice on the floor.
    Ms ***** again reached out to me via text and this time her tone had changed and she was extremely angry and vindictive towards me, demanding I pay for her mattresses. I kept telling her she was responsible for content insurance which she failed to get and that what happened was, "an act of God" (stated by my lawyer) and I was not responsible for her contents. This is in the agreement.
    She stated she was poor and, "my stuff isn't worth the deductible. And my stuff is old and ******"  She also demanded I put a dehumidifier in her unit ( there are no outlets in the units and it was frozen so a dehumidifier would not work) She also demanded I hire a truck to move her things. At this time I  do not  have any empty units for her to move to. This just angered her further and the insults and vindictiveness escalated.
    I gave her three options;
    1) I would give her 2 months free rent and she moves out by June 1st. ( I feel her being at the units would not be comfortable for either one of us at this time)
    2) I would pay for another unit somewhere else for 3 months at the same price as well I got a mover that I would pay for  (as long as it was in the county of Haliburton, where she resides) if she moved by April 1, 2022 ( since she seemed to be in a hurry to remove her things immediately)
    3) I would give her $600.00 for the mattresses

    To this date I have not heard back from her, other than to state that those options were not viable for her.

    I called my lawyer to ask for advice and he stated that I am not responsible, nor do I have to give her any options. I feel Ihave gone above and beyond with her under these circumstances and I feel she is taking her irresponsibility out on me.

    I did email her to ask her to not contact me again on any personal level and that any unit related concerns should go through the email address and that I had an office person taking on the responsibilities of the emails now.

    I cannot open the email from the *** as the amount of stress she has created around this is unnecessary and unacceptable to me. Her text messages were so ugly and angry that it has caused me to have troubles breathing and sleeping. I will not be talked to or treated with such disrespect. I do feel bad for her and I did everything I could to fix the issue with her. I have no legal right to help her with this issue yet I still did my best to rectify the issue.

    Thank you for taking your time with this, I look forward to hearing from you.
    I also have pictures if you would like as well as I can get a statement from the property manager to back up my claims, as well as my lawyer.

    Thank you
