We have been banking at Peoples Independent bank, in Scottsboro AL for the past 25 years. About a year ago someone stole a check and made a copy, then tried to cash it. Thankfully he was arrested. We are a business and upset about what we should do. The bank manager assured us that our account was fine and let us know they had placed a alert on our account. On or around 12-30-21 the bank called to let us know a check had cleared, turns out it was a forged check. We filled out all the paper work and turned it into the police. We were assured yet again our account was safe, on 1/13-22 the bank put the money back into the account. We were happy with that and it felt safe. Then around 2-1-22 when my bank statement came in, I found yet another one, we did the same paper work and filled a police report. Both checks were a large amount. The first one was 16,632.00 and some change, the second was 18,468.00 and some change. So now were not feeling so safe especially since it was clearly a forgery, my name was even spelled wrong. We then decided to open another account. During this time they put the second forged check back into our account. We decided we were still not comfortable with it, so we went to the bank and closed our second account. We knew we couldn't close the compromised account yet because we still had checks out. When we removed our money from the second account, they reversed the deposit of both forged checks from the main account. So were out somewhere around 38,000.00 that they refused to put back into our account. They were not happy with us closing the other account so they took there money back. We have ask a couple of local bank managers about this and they are saying they have never heard anything like this. Now were in the process of getting a lawyer. We have notified the FBI and other banking agencies. While I am concerned about my money, I'm really concerned about them doing this to other people who can't afford to lawyer up.
