Good luck trying to talk to a PERSON in customer support. In September 2024 I was randomly charged almost $300 even though I hadn't sued Hipcamp for almost a year. There is nothing on my Hipcamp account tied to the charge. No trips listed. No messages. Nothing except a charge on my credit card I did not make. And I cannot get any customer support past the ** feature "Fern." It tries to help me, then says it can't. Says that it will put me in touch with a human "Support Guide," then says there's an error doing so, it'll try again. Then says there was another error, it'll try again. Then says there was another error, it'll try...you get the picture. It never resolves into a connection to a human nor is it able to generate the support ticket that indicates someone will reach back out. Just an endless loop of nothing except frustation and no answers. I even ended the chat and started over several times. I can't imagine what it would be like to book something, arrive to find it not as promised, and try to do something about it the moment. No wonder there are such bad reviews. I hadn't researched Hipcamp in in some time. Yikes, I will be closing my account.

Hi *****, Thanks for sharing this feedback! As has been explained to you by our Support team: the charge of $265.03 on September 14 was for your booking #******* at Above *** **** Glamping, Black Mtn from October 30 to November 02. We can see via your Hipcamp Messages that you were in frequent contact with the Host throughout the duration of your booking, including letting them know when you were leaving, and when their portajohn serviceman arrived. As such, it is difficult for us to understand how you feel this charge was unexpected, when your account activity confirms that you did indeed book and go on this trip. Is it possible you thought this trip was booked using a different card? You are more than welcome to reply to your Support ticket if you have further questions!

I have used Hipcamp many times but this was the First time that I have had a vindictive host. I booked 2 night in Southern CO, it was $319 for just a safari tent with bed and tables and a camp toilet. The tent was situated in a field with the views of mountains. I have camped in some very remote places and paid through the nose for the experience, but this listing was something else. They said off-grid and this means different things but yes, mostly no modern conveniences. Then the host send me a laundry list of things that we need to do to stay in that tent. Including bringing our own bedsheets. I mean what kind listing will have a bed but no sheets and you pay $300 for it? That was the last straw and I emailed the host saying I need to cancel my booking. I then wrote to Hipcamp stating the obvious, somehow the host saw my comments to Hipcamp and decided that he did not want to refund me anything, and he admitted as much to me in an email. Long story short I did not get anything back even though I made booking and canceled it within hours. Hipcamp gave me a $20 credit, and just did not answer any of my emails. They do not care one way or another what kind of hosts they have and the hosts are just free to ask for whatever money for their substandard accommodations. They can set whatever cancellation policy they want and Hipcamp would not interfere. I felt cheated and disappointed. Will never use Hipcamp ever again and tell my friends and family to do the same. I will give 0 stars if I could.

Hi Uttara, Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us and with the broader Hipcamp community. As was explained to you in your Support ticket: if a booking is cancelled outside the terms of a Host's stated cancellation policy, we cannot refund the booking without Host approval. The Host's listing clearly states the following: "The ranch is completely off the grid, without water or electricity. Because of the remote location, we operate this as “self service”. This means no cleaning fees, however, guests are required to bring their own bedding and drinking water. Additionally, guests will need to clean the rental and remove their trash before checking out." Their cancellation policy is also outlined on the listing, as it is with all Hipcamp listings. As a result, the Host declined to issue a refund as the cancellation was not due to any error or omission on their behalf. We strongly encourage all guests to read the details of a listing prior to making a booking, to ensure clear expectations. We are sorry this Hipcamp experience missed the mark, and wish you all the best for your outdoor adventures in the future!

They charge customers an outrageous amount even after the booking is canceled the next day. They are a scam and I do not recommend them. I was charged $272.07 and other service fees that even the host was not aware Of! It should have been $188.47 but the Hipcamp charged a lot service fees for just booking the trip even though I canceled it the next day when I saw the outrageous bill on my ***** I told the host of the camp also about their fees abd why I was canceling my trip. They are a scam operaton

Hi ****, Thanks for sharing this feedback with us and with the broader Hipcamp community. To clarify: your booking had a total Hipcamp Service Fee of $83.60; the rest of the charges were part of the booking cost (ie, the nightly rates charged by the Host, not by Hipcamp). When you cancelled your booking, the Host refunded you all but the non-refundable Service Fee of $83.60, in line with the Cancellation Policy you agreed to at the time. Our team have also communicated with you that, as a gesture of goodwill, we have applied the non-refundable Service Fee amount to your account as Hipcash. Hope this helps!

I enjoyed hipcamp until I realized that they are not host friendly. They say they are working on getting people outdoors and that is their mission statement, but this is untrue. They had an amazing host that they cancelled their contract immediately due to a neighbor that called with lies. Without even listening to the host, there was nothing they could do to stay on the service. The host called The Dyrt to let them know of the issue and they just laughed about the neighbors and continued as normal. Hipcamp needs to change some of their policies to be host friendly or hopefully their service will fail. I tried to contact the president of Hipcamp, she never replied, just heard from some senior call center agent. Terrible service.

Hi ******, Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback with us and with the broader Hipcamp community! As outlined in your Support ticket with us regarding this matter, Hipcamp unfortunately is unable to reactivate this property at this time due to the harassment towards campers from neighboring residents, which you have raised in your communications with us. We're sorry that the neighbors are actively resisting this activity in their area, but at this time we don't feel comfortable sending guests to this property due to the behavior you described to us. Whilst such behavior might not bother some guests such as yourself, many campers would not expect to encounter or manage such behavior from neighbors when they are simply trying to enjoy the outdoors. It is important that Hipcampers feel safe and welcomed when on a trip, and it's for this reason that we cannot continue to send guests to this property in good faith knowing that they may face harassment or confrontation from neighboring residents. Should there be a change in circumstances regarding the neighboring residents, we would be happy to revisit this decision with the Host.

I booked a reservation at a Hip Camp location in *****, **** a couple of months ago for a few nights. I became ill and could not go on the trip. The proprietor would not answer any of my phone calls or texts. There were numerous attempts. I am very unhappy and will never use Hip Camp locations again. This experience is a great example of how to not run a business!

Don't book with hip camp.. they took money from me for a camping venue that was no longer active on their site. I tried for days to message The Host and ask questions I messaged them through hip camp and message them directly. The host has refunded my money but hip camp has kept some of the money. It seems they should be aware if a venue is no longer operating. Now it is too late for us to find a venue that suits our needs and we are quite devastated.

Hi *******, Thanks for sharing your experience. Your property was removed from the Hipcamp platform in March 2022 due to a violation of our Inclusion Policy. The prominent display of signs asserting that members of most global religions will be going to H*** does not ****** a sense of safety or inclusivity for members of our community, and your unwillingness to work with Hipcamp on this matter therefore led to the removal of your property from the platform. Should you be willing to revisit this discussion in the future we encourage you to get in touch with us via ************************ Many thanks, Hipcamp Support

The entire organization is crumbling; rightfully so. In my view, there is an overwhelming sense and culture of paranoia, greed, mismanagement bottom of the barrel, and customer service on the level with places such as Lyft and Uber. Recently, I lost a booking for 100 people. The reason was that the dime-store app they used was constantly hanging up while trying to reply to the camper inquiry. I tried diligently to reach somebody at Hipcamp, to no avail. In fact, I got a voice-mail 2-3 days later, asking me to email my concern. In the meantime, I've (presuming many others) lost your booking. The ******/****** tried to provide me with her alternate contact. Hipcamp intentionally and with malice blocked all attempts in our trying to reach them, including blocking the campers mobile number she tried to give to us. Hipcamp fears that someone will book outside the app and they won't get their cut, despite the contract that we signed for the split. It is legally actionable if there were a material breach, but that wasn't enough. They throw the "baby out with the bath water," and now they will need to defend the lawsuit we are bringing while we seek other plaintiffs for class action status. We can not lose $10,000 to $13,000 and just walk away. Similarly, *****'s (formerly ******* list) lost to our class action on similar grounds. We even bypassed the arbitration on other grounds. We were directly responsible for closing down the brand and bringing on 900 plaintiffs. It is unfortunate, but it must be done. I'd advise either as a camper or as a host that you do not utilize this service. It is dangerous, in my opinion, and fraudulent, in my opinion, based upon the above and forgoing. In solicitations for our class action, if you have complaints as a camper or host, please feel free to contact us at: bigtips2022"at"proton.me. Tell us your story. Your personal contact information will not be shared with anyone, less a court order compelling us to do so during the action.
