We hired ****** ******* and Sunshine State Builders to help with several projects around our new house. These included structural, tile, and - the focus here - electrical. Several months after the projects were completed this past year (early-2024), we noticed issues with one of the outlets ******** team changed out. We brought in a specialized, licensed electrician to investigate and they found what were described as "massive code violations and fire hazards" inside the wall. Disturbed by this, we then had each of the many electrical elements looked at. Despite functioning okay, all but one outlet was at least a code violation, but many were immediate fire hazards - with wiring work described as "carnage" behind the outlet boxes and walls. I shared this concerning news with ****** over the phone, but there was no indication of concern. After several follow-up attempts over email and text over the span of a month, I received no further response. We paid for all of the electrical work to be re-done with a more trustworthy contractor.Initial Complaint

Working with Sunshine State Builders, ****** ******* (the owner), and his team was the WORST DECISION weve ever made as homeowners, leading to tremendous financial, emotional, and mental damage.****** had us rebuild our entire balcony deck due to a leak, costing tens of thousands of dollars. He said it would take only "10 days or so", but it took from Oct 2023 - Feb 2024, with 5 FAILED INSPECTIONS for serious issues: wood posts under decking unprotected against rain, wrong blocking between sleepers, missing exterior straps, big gap on fascia boards, etc.. ****** hid the failed inspections and I only found out bc our tenant got notices on his door. Then less than 6 months after completion, deck was leaking again.******** subs went check it out and since they didnt want to take responsibility, they said the roof was leaking. We sent professional roofers to check out the roof and they all found that the roof had no issues. We asked ****** to help figure out the leak cause, to fix it and document the fix since we're still under his 1-year warranty.Instead, without looking into leak reason, his men "fixed" with some caulking and spray painting, a very unprofessional and poorly done job. No photos, no documentation. When I kindly asked if ****** could pls do more investigation into leak cause and do a proper fix, he said he was overwhelmed with a family issue and couldnt help out.We had to finally hire another GC who easily identified the cause of the leak - ******** team had caulked up the gap that needed to be between the walls and the board in order to have the water drip off; ******** team's "fix" only made the situation worse by caulking up the gap even more. Since ****** then ghosted on us, we had to pay another few thousand dollars to this GC to fix ******** work. All of this is fully documented by the other GC, who commented that the type of work done by Sunshine was not only inept, it was downright absurd / stupid bc it clearly lacked common sense.Business response

It is unfortunate that you feel this way. However, I must clarify that this review is not from an actual customer of mine. I was contracted by the reviewers parents, who own the property, to repair their balcony, and all agreements were made directly with them. The individual who wrote this review resides in ***** and frequently called at inconvenient hours, such as 2:00 and 3:00 a.m., to align with her local time. Throughout the project, she attempted to exert control over the work, dictate changes to the sequence of operations, and micromanage the process via WhatsApp, despite having limited construction knowledge.
We did receive a call regarding a minor leak that we believed originated from an area on the second-floor roof, which was not part of our scope of work. We made two additional visits to inspect and address what we believed to be the cause and completed the repair at no additional cost. After water testing, we agreed to monitor the area during the next major rainstorm to ensure the issue was resolved. Unfortunately, this approach did not satisfy the reviewer, and she chose to hire another contractor, despite being informed that this would void her warranty. She then sought reimbursement from our company for expenses incurred with the new contractor.
The other contractor scrutinized our work, focusing on perceived flaws. It is important to note that our work was inspected and passed according to local standards. The issues cited as failed inspections were due to missing paperwork in the permit box and one adjustment needed to the plans because the original drawings did not account for the specific flashing required. While it did take time to revise, stamp, and approve the engineered drawings, this delay was beyond our control. The type of flashing best suited for the application could only be determined after the permit was pulled and demolition was completed. Despite these challenges, the work was inspected and approved by local authorities.
We submitted all required paperwork promptly upon receiving the engineered drawings, but the building department experienced significant delays in processing permits. This pushed our schedule into the holiday season when many of our staff were on vacation, causing us to manage our resources carefully to accommodate all clients. The reviewers frustration with the permit delays led her to pressure us to start immediately and continue work even through inclement weather.
We always try to shoot for the stars with all our clients but unfortunately youIt is unfortunate that you feel this way.
