  On 7/27/2022 we contracted with the owner of this company to build a pergola in our backyard. A line item for permitting with the city was included for $2,200. A deposit for $5,000 was given to ******* (owner) at the time. On 10/31/2022 another $5,000 was paid and work was started. When queried as to the permitting he assured us that it was underway. By the 5th day of work my wife called the city and was informed that no permitting process had been initiated by the company. We instructed him to cease all work and initiated the permitting process ourselves. Over the next several months he provided us with a succession of excuses as to why he could not complete the permitting process and complete our pergola. This included our paying $600 to a structural engineer referred by ******* for structural wind load calculations. We also paid him another $1,000 to temporarily place some gravel at the pergola site so it would not be muddy. It is now mid May 2023 and he has stopped responding to my texts and will not answer my phone calls. We have incurred total costs of about $12,000 and have a partially completed and unpermitted pergola in our backyard. The owner of this company has repeatedly lied to us and failed to abide by his contractual obligations. The amounts involved do not rise to a level where litigation is an option. However I am filing this complaint so that there is a public record of our experience so that others will avoid this builder and his company as they are dishonest and unethical. My next step will likely be to tear it down and start over with another builder. Stay away from this company.
