I went to the emergency room at Kirby on 5/27/24. I was sick to my stomach and in pain. Every time I threw up it was black. The doctor examined me and said it was likely an ulcer. They gave me 2 different medications and sent me home. I called ******** soon after I received Kirby’s first bill dated 7/1/2024. They told me they paid what they approved which was $912.25. In addition to that Kirby billed me $916.16. I called Kirby and told them what ******** said. They said they would check and get back. I received their second denial on 9/9/2024. I contend that I couldn’t owe more than the 20% ******** doesn’t cover. Here’s the letter I sent to Kirby on 8/14/2024 that will help explain. On 5/27/24 I checked in to the emergency department at Kirby Medical Center. I was having abdominal pain and sick to my stomach. Everything I threw up the last couple of days had been black. I told this to the doctor. He examined me and said I likely had an ulcer. I was given two prescriptions and sent home. I continued to experience pain and sickness. The next morning I checked into the emergency department at ***** ******** in Champaign. I was given a CT scan. It showed I had a rupture in my intestine that was leaking into my stomach. They put a tube through my nose to pump out my stomach. In about an hour I felt much better. They operated to repair the rupture. I was in the hospital for four days. I’ve received your bill for $916.16, of which $403.00 was for medication I don’t need. I hope you’ll reconsider and give me a break on this bill.

This patient's case is somewhat complicated and I'm having my Chief Medical Officer review the care provided.  I plan to provide a formal resolution to this the first part of next week.

Just an update that we will be writing off all the charges related to this patient's encounter.  I have talked with my Chief Medical Officer and he is reaching out personally to the patient to discuss the findings from his review and what our intent is.  After that we will write off the charges and I will post that update here.
