On Friday 1/28/22, I logged on to two online gas price websites and both indicated that the Marathon station 8913,299 located at 8913 Belair Road Perry Hall, MD XXXXX, had a cash price for regular gas at $2.82 and a credit price of $3.17.When I arrived at 425pm, the main digital sign confirmed that the credit price was $3.17. When I went inside to pay the clerk, I asked 'Is the cash price for regular $2.82' and he replied 'Yes'. I gave him $25 for pump #2 and proceeded to get my gas. Once my receipt was printed it showed 7.86 gallons @ $3.17/gallon. I went in to the clerk to get an adjustment and he told me that the amount was correct. I reminded him that he confirmed the cash price was 2.82 and pointed to the signage outside which clearly stated 'Credit $3.17'. He stated 'Cash credit all one price'. To advertise separate amounts for cash and credit then NOT honor them is a bait and switch tactic and quite illegal per the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.I wrote to the Marathon customer service email 1/29 requesting a refund of the difference and suggesting they retrain their staff on company policies. On Monday 1/31/22, I received the following email from Marathon 'Thank you for your email concerning the fuel prices at the Marathon Station located at 8913 Belair Rd Nottingham, MD XXXXX. All Marathon stations are independently owned and operated. We will forward your complaint to the appropriate party.'To date, I have received no refund or response. I have submitted a report to the FTC as well.

    Business response

    07/15/2022

Business Response /* (1000, 13, 2022/05/24) */ Thank you for your email concerning cash discounting at a Marathon station. All Marathon stations are independently owned and operated and the owner/operator is responsible for all aspects of their business. Retailers are charged a fee by the credit card companies for every transaction processed with a credit or a debit card. To offset these fees many stations including Marathon offer a cash and credit price. The credit card price can be charged if the location gets charged a fee to process. We are happy to forward your concern to the appropriate party over this location. Consumer Response /* (3000, 15, 2022/05/28) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) There response is the same as the one prior-they say they will forward it to the 'independent owner', but this matter WAS already forwarded to the 'independent owner' and 'they' never responded or fixed the issue. Again on 1/28/22, the Marathon station DID have a cash price of $2.82 as verified by two online customers(who purchased gas there within 3-4 hours of my purchase) AND the Marathon employee working there, yet I was charged the credit price of $3.17. Business Response /* (4000, 17, 2022/06/01) */ The complaint was forwarded to the party over the station as all Marathon locations are independently owned/operated. The owner/operator is responsible for all aspects of their business, including pricing. We will again forward your complaint. Consumer Response /* (4200, 19, 2022/06/04) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) The owner/operator may be responsible for all aspects of their business, but they represent the Marathon brand have done NOTHING to resolve this illegal bait and switch incident.
