In February of 2022, Jeff W********, owner of Crown remodeling, agreed via contract to tear down and remodel a covered porch and deck on the rear of my home. This covered porch and deck structurally support the second floor master bedroom directly above. This job was fully paid when completed. I was never provided with permitting or inspection of the job. Within 6 months of the work being done, water damage started to appear on the interior walls of the work that was completed; since then the damage has accelerated significantly (photos attached). At this point, I began the process of requesting repairs to be made based on the warranty within the contract (Email chains attached for reference). After months of back and forth, and lack of movement from the contractor, I began requesting the permit that was submitted to the state/county for the work that was completed on my home to confirm that the work was done within compliance of building regulations and statutes of the Baltimore County Building Code. According to section 112.1 of the building code, the work done on my home was not exempt from permitting. The Baltimore County Government website also indicates that permits are required for: “Any additions, alterations or structural modifications to existing dwellings, including those located in historic districts.” In addition to not applying for a permit as required by state building code and county statutes, item 6 on the signed contract titled “General Terms and Conditions of Agreement” (attached), states “Contractor shall furnish all permits and licenses…” When confronted regarding the status of the permit submitted by the contractor, Jeff W******** (owner of Crown Remodeling) replied with the following: “You also said not one thing about permits. I feel like you are just trying to cause trouble.” (email attached for reference). Another element of the contract indicated that any faulty work or materials would be replaced. AN MHIC complaint is in.

We have acknowledged your request for arbitration.  In an effort to best move forward in another direction and possibly not go into arbitration, we are requesting that we be permitted to come out to the property to access the current situation of the areas of concern. We would also need to take some measurements in order to properly review the concern since there has been some time since we have been out to the property.

I am rejecting this response because: they were provided with ample opportunity to solve the issue, and instead chose not to.  They were also provided with an opportunity to solve this issue via a demand letter in a fiscal fashion alternative to fixing the issues, which they also chose not to pursue.  They rescheduled "repairs" on me multiple times, and chose to tell me that my assessment of the problem was incorrect after agreeing to fix the problems that their own contractors identified as incorrect/problematic.  They also admitted in an email that the repairs needed to be done, and they were not.  We felt gaslighted by the owner of the business to the extent that my wife requested to have a few cameras installed on the exterior of my house.  I do not have any trust in their workmanship, credibility, or business at this point and have the work scheduled to be completed by a different contractor.  I wish to continue forward with arbitration.

    Sincerely,

    **** ******

I am rejecting this response because: I have already hired and paid a contractor to do this work. They are in the middle of the job as I write this email, doing exactly the work that crown indicated they would complete in their response, on top of rectifying the issues with the sills and screens that are impacted by the use of the bad materials.

    Sincerely,

Downspout of gutter fell off. Contacted the owner (Jeff), via text with photo asking him to repair andlifetime not responded. Siding popping off near soffit. Contract states lifetime guarantee. Contacted the owner (Jeff), via text with photo asking him to repsir and he had not responded. This will end up causing water damage.

We received the message from this customer whose work we performed on her house last August. It's important to note that these issues in the pictures provided are a result of the high winds we have been having in the area these past few months and not due to any faulty labor in our part. At any rate, we will try our best to have someone come out to reattach the elbow on the downspout and retack up the piece of siding. We are extremely short handed right now so we will try our best to get someone out there soon.

This issue has not been resolved because they have not fixed their work.

I hired Crown Remodeling to replace the gutters and siding of my home. They started off by putting the wrong color siding on my house. When i called the owner, he asked me, "can you live with it?", As I was inspecting the siding (before they placed the correct color), I noticed a hole with insulation coming out of it. It was mostly covered with siding, but I could still see the hole (I can provide photos). They flat out lied to me about the insulation "falling from the sofit above" when there's clearly a hole in my house where the insulation is coming from and tried to convince me that they placed flashing. I was able to see that there was no flashing. They apparently fixed it after they installed the correct color, but I doubt it. One of the installers was drinking beer (Coors Light) while working on scaffolding on my property. One of them peed on my house. They also got caulk on brand new porch couch cushions. They installed a downspout sticking straight out right between a door and stairs (a major trippng hazard, and I'm afraid I'm going to gash my shins on it), and when I asked about it, the owner, Jeff, said he would have it fixed and he never did. We had also originally agreed that they would paint another portion of my house. The communication was very slow and it took a while for them to send me the contract for that. After I signed it, communication was slow to try to schedule the date. I had asked the sales associate, Nick and he said that Jeff had to get back to him. Over a week later, I texted the owner Jeff and let him know that I was frustrated due to all of these things happening, and that I wanted to schedule to complete the job. He basically told me to find another person to do it. There is also an area below a window that has no siding underneath, and in my opinion, looks unfinished. I had sent him photos and asked why it was like that, and he has not responded. I can provide photos and screenshots of everything.

It's unfortunate to receive a complaint of this nature after we had a walk thru with this customer and all was ok. In regards to the downspout, this was placed in the correct and only spot and is unable to be moved. The siding below the window is actually not siding but part of the roof flashing and it cannot be covered up. The hole in the bottom of the siding was corrected prior to this complaint. As far as the additional painting work, there has been no deposit made towards this work and we are not interested in doing a project of this nature and considering this complaint, we don't see how this customer may still be interested in our services, so it's best to part ways. On the issue of the siding crew drinking and urinating, we were not there to witness this, however we have made mention to the crew that if any behavior and/or complaint of this sort is to brought to our attention, they will all be immediately terminated. Our apologies if there was any of this inappropriate behavior.

The "walk thrugh" as Jeff described that event was actually Jeff showing up to my house unannounced. He asked me what I thought and I told him about the gutter. He literally stated that he would have it taken care of.  And when he asked me about everything else, I specifically stated that I hadn't had a chance to look at the back yet, abs I will let him know the next time we chat when we schedule the rest (which clearly never happened).

I have been trying to get them scheduled for the rest so I could show him under the window (which had siding under it before), but I had never gotten to schedule that because they are testicle with communication. And then,  when I texted him a photo and asked why it was like this,  he never responded,  and that is when I contacted BBB.

My next step is to have another contractor look at the gutter and under the window,  and if it needs to be corrected,  I will offer Jeff the chance to fix it,  or I will have another contractor fix it and request that he covers expenses, then I leave my honest review with photos.

    Everyone loves an honest testimonial.
