I am an owner operator of small landscape company had Freedom Brick and Stone (FBS) build a small retaining wall. We do not do hardscapes worked with FBS in the past, ex of my wife's sister. FBS was paid $ 2,250, work was completed on a Sunday, into Monday, not able to see the results up close until Tuesday. Tuesday morning, arrived to gather debris and remaining balance, met client's mother who had issue with the front. Wall was serpentine design, 18" high X 35' long, 3 courses of 16" wide block, 3" cap, retaining a small bed, sides dying into hill. The issue, course to course setback was wide, made front look poor, exposed interior openings. Obvious contractor left tabs on that create 5/8" setback in straight wall, but on curves, created larger setback. I agreed, had them keep balance, took pictures, contacted contractor. Contractor said block too big for curves, can't take tabs off and pull block forward would compromise integrity. Contractor went back, met the mother, still refused accountability for 2 weeks, we needed closure so we did a review on his wall. Left side 2" out of level, right side 3.5". Various caps did not sit flush, cap cuts were poor, cap overhang inconsistent. Issues were obvious asked contractor to address/preserve future work already in motion, but he refused so with no other option, had another company, tear it down and rebuild. During tear down we found smaller block used as support, and 2 blocks cracked in base course. Rebuild cost was $1,900. Trying to recover $1,900, talked with him, had lawyer send letter, ready to start small claims, now says it was coordination and oversight. I met client, sold job, took him and discussed job, procured, paid for and delivered materials, hauled away existing wall block, coordinated with the homeowner day of the build to get rid of the extra soil, and picked up and got rid of all pallets and debris after the job. I have pictures and video of original wall, tear down and rebuild.

Tod ****** landscapes hired me to remove and and install retaining wall in the same design that it was in we removed this was done per our agreement which I have 4 witnesses that will testify to that. We removed a 12 inch block Tod ****** supplied a 16 inch block. The material is designed with a offset each course steps back a inch which holds with the help of gravity and the offset tabs interlocking the wall blocks together. His solution to the jagged radius was to remove wall cut off the interlocking tabs and reset wall plumb at my cost we never even spoke of modifying the material or install it in this structurally inferior manner even if he offered to pay me to install it this way I would not because I know it’s going to fail and I refuse to do inferior work to hide the fact that he replaced a 12 inch block with a 16inch . The changes he made are severely compromised the integrity of the wall. THE WALL IS GOING TO FAIL. After reviewing the pictures of the wall there is already movement happening corners sticking out and is only going to worsen. I have never seen someone butcher and install retaining walls in my 38 years of work. I’m sad for the home owner who was sold the job Tod ****** landscaping installed
