Henry P******* of Asphalt Appeal LLC of Effingham NH or possibly TLC Asphalt of Derry NH came to our home unexpectedly on Friday June 24 saying they had paved a driveway nearby and had some asphalt left over and would give us a great deal to pave our driveway. My husband and I initially said no, we could not afford to tar the driveway, noting we had been patching holes with tar as that’s all we could afford. We noted several times that we are struggling financially and said no. Henry finally told us he could do a 10 by 100 area for $3000. **** and I discussed this and, given the bottom of our driveway was washed out and had potholes we agreed to having them pave as much as they could for $3000. He said it could be a bit more or less as they can’t always stop at an exact amount. We told him ok as long as it was in the $3000 area. There is much more detail I can provide but the quick explanation is they tarred some of the driveway and came and told us we owed them $9900. My husband and I were shocked, very distraught and disputed it. Henry and his father proceeded to angrily threaten to sue us, told us the asphalt distributor would also sue us, and that they would take our assets and attach our home and that we would lose everything if we did not pay them $9900. They also said if we didn’t pay right then they couldn’t pay the asphalt distributor who would then not let them pick up asphalt for the following week’s scheduled jobs and we’d be sued for their lost business as well. They eventually told us they would accept $8000 if we paid right then, and under duress we put $3500 on one credit card and $4500 on another. This morning I notified the second card that we are disputing the $4500 charge. We are honest people so we left the $3500 payment stand and that’s even more than what we told them we could pay. They were so hostile we have notified Canterbury PD as we are concerned about retaliation. We request your help.
