My health insurance has an out of pocket maximum. Despite reaching the limit, SportsCare continued to deduct $20 co-pays from my HRA account for months, over 30 times since May 2024. The company agrees I am due a refund. However, it will only remit after the therapy visits end. Collecting the money I am owed requires that I give up needed medial care or prolong the term of their debt. SportCare's reimbursement "policy" for overcharges is, in my opinion and experience, unethical and subject to legal scrutiny.

I am filing a formal complaint against SportsCare Physical Therapy for deceptive billing practices and lack of communication. After undergoing shoulder surgery in June 2022, I sought treatment at SportsCare facility in the Mountain Lakes, NJ location. I was assured that my insurance would be treated as in-network, with no copay required due to having met my out-of-pocket maximum. In early 2023, I was informed that I needed to start paying a $25 co-pay per visit, which I agreed to. However, SportsCare intentionally hid the possibility of any additional billing. Had I been informed of these charges, I would have immediately ceased attending sessions to avoid a financial burden. To my shock, nine months (9) after completing my treatment in April 2023, I received an initial bill in January 2024 for $807.61. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue, I received no response from SportsCare. Instead, I was issued a revised bill in March 2024 for $1,232.03, followed by another bill in May 2024 for $1,207.03. These arbitrary and inconsistent amounts underscore the artificial nature of the charges being imposed. The lack of explanation for these discrepancies raises serious concerns about the legitimacy of the billing practices employed. Despite multiple attempts to address this matter through emails and certified mail, I have received no response, while the inconsistent bills continue to arrive. This lack of transparency, coupled with the arbitrary billing, is both unacceptable and indicative of unethical practices and possible fraud. The systematic ignorance of my correspondence is outrageous and insulting.

I visited SportsCare Physical Therapy in Jefferson, NJ to receive treatment for my knee as recommended from my doctor. I went through insurance verification first which SportsCare said with my insurance is in network and would cost $20 per visit. After this conversation I went to SportsCare 8 times from Jan 18, 2024 to Feb 13,2024 thinkin it would be $20 a visit since they checked with my insurance. But it turns out it was not in network in January and I would be billed $3041.33 for the four visits in January and the four visits in February I received a bill for $125 for those. So in total I was billed $3541.33 out of pocket for 8 visits more then what I expected at $20 a visit totaling $160 total. I was never informed the cost of this treatment until months later when I received the bills in the mail. I was shocked by this so I called the company and asked about this and we were able to resolve the out of network January dates which would be changed to be billed as in network, but were not able to fix the main issue that I was told after they checked with my insurance that it would be $20 a visit not $125 a visit. I explained that its not right for them to tell me the cost is $20 and get a bill of $125 per visit months later. If I had know it would cost this much I would not have gone to this place. I believe its unfair to bill me this amount and believe it violates the No Surprises Act. I can see that they charged $832.39 per visit to my health care provider and my health insurance covers 85% which equals the $125 per visit but they never told me that amount and I assumed it was $20 a visit and they charged $133 to my health care provider and the 85% brought it down to $20.
