NJ Heat coaches mislead 9-10 year old girls and took deposit money of $500 from 3 different famlies. Upon finding out about the misinformation, we asked for out $500 to be refunded. *********************** (Treasurer) has said no. We did not sign any contracts.

    Business response

    08/21/2024

The below is in response to a BBB notification sent to the ******************** on 8/13/24 related to *************************.

The complaint was submitted under the reason code: Repair Issues.  This is not an accurate category as we do not provide repair services.

***************************** daughter attended tryouts for a travel softball team in our organization and she was accepted on the team.  During the tryouts, I spoke to parents of players that were present to let them know that our INTENTION was to take no more than 12 players on the team, but that we would potentially need to look at additional players if some players had competing activities that would cause them to miss practices or events.  We do this at this age to protect the players and the team from not having enough players to compete at an event.  The deposit was paid to complete a mutual agreement that their daughter was accepted to the team and that the team would consider that spot filled and would no longer host tryouts for that spot.  It is common practice in travel sports that deposits are non-refundable to prevent players from accepting spots on multiple teams and continuing to look for a "better situation".  Not doing this puts our teams at risk as the player's family would have no deterrent from accepting a position and backing out.  After the deposit was paid,  3 families collectively decided that they did wanted to forfeit their spots and requested their deposits back, proving why we ask for deposits to lock in their spot.  As part of the mutual agreement, we would not have replaced the players if a better player came along because we made an agreement.  At no point did we renege on our commitment as a travel organization to provide the players with training, playing time, participation in events, etc.  Our focus would have been on aggressive development to make sure the team was in a position to excel and be prepared for the next level.  As an organization, we have a 25 year track record of doing this.  There was no misinformation provided by us as an organization and I made myself available throughout the tryout process to answer any questions.  There decision to not want to be part of the team occurred prior to a single team practice taking place. As of now, we view these players as having voluntarily forfeited their spots on the team and by doing so, also forfeiting their deposit.
