I hired **** ******** to tile my kitchen backsplash. He bid the job and showed me photos of work he had done. We had a lot of trouble connecting to start the job because of scheduling conflicts mainly on his end. I am at fault for one day when he showed up and my tile wasn't ready, so that is my error but this complaint is about his work ethic. He showed up on 8/3/24 to work and said his tile saw broke and had to rent one. He returned and had a helper who basically stood around while Rene set the tile when he could have been using the shop vac to clean up (something that took me extra time the following day). Rene worked on my brand new quartz countertop without covering and said " Oh i will clean it after". i feel being proactive rather than reactive is best practice. also respecting the clients home. Although he completed almost a 1/3, I mentioned it looked messy and he said "oh i have stuff to clean it up"... but it is glue & hardens immediately. I worked 3 hours the next day, scraping it off. I informed a retired tile contractor, ***** who had referred Rene. He came by & agreed it was sloppy. ***** called him and Rene said he'd return my $. I didn't realize until the next day after i gave him a check for $200. His full price was $686.49. I have to now find someone to 'finish the job'. On Tuesday, 8/6 he changed his mind about refunding me and sent me a text saying he thinks he did a good job and will not refund the $200 after all. I had even agreed to half since he did some work and it might be salvageable. He is not truthful in two ways, offering to refund the money and that he is a tile contractor. the tiles were also uneven and very noticeable so they have to be replaced. he also feels i should cover his tile saw problem, that is not my fault. He advertises himself as a tile contractor on his business card, but i disagree, his work is sloppy & his technique is not there

I was hired by *******, we agreed on designs on layout of the tile she agreed with my estimate. Then she decided she wanted to add window seals to the estimate we agreed. I was out of town she messaged me a few times saying she wanted me to start on Monday July 1st. I went on the 5th an she didn't have the materials ready. Do I told her I would go the following Monday she said yes it was fine. I showed up she said it was the following Thursday when she thought I was going. So we again agreed for the 29th of July. Because the materials were going to show up. I showed up on the the 29th an still wasn't ready. I had to move projects to get that job out of the way. She made me lose time for a whole month. I also was recommended to her for the tile job. My business card doesn't advertise tile work.the day I started i realize it was glass tile so I told her I was going to go rent a wet tile saw because what I had was going to be difficult cutting. I never said my tile saw broke.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

After reading the response from ******** Painting, it is clear he is missing the point of my complaint. Indeed, he was recommended to me by *****, a retired tile contractor, however the recommendation was taken back and ***** apologized after seeing his work. ***** called **** and informed him the work was not up to par, so **** agreed to return the $200 I paid him, however changed his mind later. This prompted  ***** to contact his upcoming clients and informed them not to use Rene.
**** is correct that I didn't have the tile on one of the days he showed up due to a mix up in the schedule with AZ Tile order, however, he said he was fine  because he could "spend they day fishing."  He also changed days around on me and I have the text messages stating so.  The day he showed up, he stated his tile saw 'broke' there was no mention of needing  a wet saw because of the glass tile.

If his business doesn't say tile, why is he doing tile? I finally hired a professional and he had to remove ALL the tile **** installed and I had to pay an extra $400 so it is completed correctly. The tile around the outlets was installed incorrectly, so there was no way to salvage the work and I also lost money on the box of tile that had to be demoed. I had four contractors come out and said the same thing; it was not done correctly. I spent hours cleaning this up!   I lost more than he did in time and money. **** should do the ethical thing and return my money.

    Regards,

    ****** *****
