Deck Doctor provided an estimate of $8,000.00 to replace all flooring, top rails and steps of my deck. Work began on April 18, 2024. Workers appeared sporadically and the job was not "completed" until May 17, 2024. Workmanship is substandard and inferior throughout: floorboards are of uneven length, many floorboards are warped and do not lay flat, some floorboards are not nailed in, rusty screws have been used throughout, many boards are spongy to walk on, fascia boards are not nailed in properly or are not flush due to the uneven lengths of the floorboards, fascia board corners are not metered and do not meet, corners of top rails are not metered and do not meet, spacing between floorboards is uneven, floorboards were not butted together to account for natural shrinkage while deck cures prior to staining, and notched pieces of floorboard around posts are uneven and reveal gaps and spaces. This is just to name a few of the issues. Aside from these things, upon removing the floorboards from the original deck, the worker noted that the boards were infested with carpenter ants. I observed this as the old floorboards were removed and thrown into my backyard; the boards were crawling with ants. Still, the worker did not recommend removing and replacing the rails and spindles, which are also infested with ants. I did not observe this until final walk-through on May 17, 2024. Upon receiving estimates from 4 different contractors to repair or replace the items referenced above, it was noted by 3 of the 4 contractors that the subfloor was compromised as well. All 4 of the contractors have recommended a complete tear-off due to the unsoundness of the subfloor, the poor workmanship of the entire job, and the carpenter ant infestation of the railings and spindles. It is fairly obvious to all 4 other contractors. Average cost of a complete tear-off and new deck including subfloor is $10,000.00. I want reimbursement of $7,000.00 from Deck Doctor.
