I was at Rural King Huber Heights a Sunday afternoon in August when I saw two dogs left in a hot car in great distress, panting heavily. It was 85 degrees and sunny. One dog stuck his head out a partially opened window and tried valiantly to climb out, but could not. I went to the Customer Service desk, told a woman what was happening, and asked if she could make an announcement to get the owner's attention. Her idiotic non-response was, "We can't make anyone do anything." As the dogs fought for their life, another woman dressed like a manager who overhead the conversation did a military-style about face and walked off, flaunting her indifference. Left high and dry by Rural King, I called the police, who arrived shortly thereafter. Finally, after at least 45 minutes, the owner returned to his car and was cited for cruelty to animals. I was subpoenaed as a witness at his trial. Unlike Rural King, I did something. Based on my testimony, he was convicted of a serious misdemeanor. Part of my sworn, recorded testimony was that Rural King, which claims to care so much about animals when there is money in it, was of no help whatsoever. Had they shown any concern and attempted to rouse the owner, the dogs might not have suffered as long and the outcome could have been less complicated. Exhibiting less sense than the animals--which at least sensed the urgency--these employees couldn't even muster a rational response. Maybe it's time this business changed its name to "Rural Jokers."
