According to information in BBB files, Daniel G. Shackleford, began a waste collection business in Newark, Ohio in November of 2009. BBB opened its' file in December 2009 based on a consumer complaint. From 2012 to 2014, the number of inquiries increased by 250%. From 2012 to 2015 the number of complaints we received increased by 366%. In 2014 the number of Customer Reviews received increased by 1400%.
Many consumers say they signed up with CMI Waste Removal Services after receiving a flyer at their home. Complaints on file from them indicate they have paid for totes which they haven't received and/or they've paid for waste removal, and trash hasn't been picked up, and all of them say the business does not respond to requests for assistance.
In other instances, according to a suit on file with the Licking County Court of Common Pleas, at least one contract has been with a township. Some consumers, who live in a township that has contracted with CMI Waste Removal Service, allege the same difficulties; but go on to complain they are not free to choose their own waste removal company and are stuck with CMI Waste because of where they live.

The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the government’s allegations, which have not yet been proven.
On May 30, 2019, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit in Licking County Common Pleas Court against defendants CMI Waste Removal Service, Inc. and Daniel Schackleford Jr. operating a solid waste and trash collection company in Newark, Ohio and surrounding areas.
According to the lawsuit, the defendants:
- commonly missed pick update dates and sometimes did not pick up trash for several months
- often did not call consumers back, often had full voicemail
- often did not provide refunds requested by consumers for missed services.
- continued to charge some defendants when consumers attempted to cancel their services or agreements
The state is seeking restitution for consumers, a $25,000 civil penalty for each alleged violation, and is asking that the court prohibit defendants from engaging in consumer transactions until consumer restitution and civil penalties ordered have been paid.
The matter is pending.
