We hired Todd E**** 4/23/21 to do a room addition to our home for $70,000. He told us he was licensed, bonded and insured, but never produced the documentation. As it turned out, he was not licensed, bonded or insured. We paid him additional $6000 in good faith as he stated he wasn't making any money. He estimated that our project would be completed in June 2021. As of December 2021, the work was nowhere near completed. We terminated him at that time. We hired another contractor who had to re-do much of Todd's work and then complete the addition. It cost us another $56,000 . It was August 2022 before we could move in to our addition. Poor work quality issues are numerous and include: foundation that is not square, sloping decks, no insulation in crawl space, no vents in crawl space, siding kinking/not level, drywall installed over electric plugs, window installed upside down, shower stall installed backwards, ceiling tiles stapled over drywall , external doors poorly installed, wall insulation was improper, drywall and ceiling had to be redone. He damaged our siding, our lawn, did not haul away trash, broke our water pipe, hit cable lines twice. He partially paid plumbing subcontractor and did not pay electrical subcontractor at all. His foundation work failed city inspection and he did not tell us. He did not get other inspections done and this caused a great deal of difficulty for us to get final approvals and occupancy permit from the city. We had to pay the architect for additional documentation to convince the city to approve our addition. His work ethic was largely absent. He worked at most 4 hrs/day and many days just didn't show up at all, without any explanation.

The drawers fell completely off with cupboard when I pulled them out to put something away in the drawer. I explain to him exactly what I wanted & he said he could do the job. When he finished I told him that really wasn't the way I explained it to him. He said that's the best he could do, because he couldn't find the sliders he needed to do the job. He should have told me about the sliders before he stated the fee.

Homeowners signed contract with Todd E**** on March 24, 2022, with an original project start date of April 12, 2022. We contracted Todd to re-build our old deck (new deck boards & railing, add a shingled roof, and complete a paver patio). On March 24, 2022 we wrote Todd a check for $8,000 as a deposit of 50% of total project cost. After homeowners completed demo, Todd stated we needed additional support joists. On April 19, 2022 we wrote Todd a check for another $1,000 for half of the materials and labor cost of the additional joists. We had multiple concerns related to the quality of work, project timeline, communication, and other issues. Specifically, Todd laid 1x6x12 boards for deck floor. Actual thickness of these boards is 0.75 inch. Boards bend when walked on, they are not standard use for decking per Ohio Residential Building code. Boards were not laid square and spacing in between boards is inconsistent. New support joists added prior to laying the new decking are not square with original supports, are not secured to deck frame by joist hangers, and many are crooked under the new deck flooring. The center border board is not straight and is being supported by used/discarded wood from the demo of the original deck posts. Decking running perpendicular to the center boarder board is not cut straight and looks sloppy. Contractor used old 4x4 posts from the demo of the old deck to support the boards placed as deck stairs instead of adding additional stair stringers. This solution is not safe, sturdy, or durable. Todd moved his start date multiple times and had multiple no call/no shows during this process. After receiving termination letter, Todd came to our home, uninvited, at 7:20am on 5/23/2022 to go over the termination letter/photos. There was no resolution, Todd blamed the deck boards on Lowes loading the wrong ones. We requested a refund of $9,000 less materials/labor. Todd has never provided a refund.

It would take a few pages to explain all the builder failed to do and there isn’t room here ito do that so we’ll be brief. We hired and signed a contract with T-Ice Carpentry Works LLC on March 3 (he incorrectly wrote March 4 on contract).

We thoroughly explained to him before signing everything we needed done to rebuild a 25 year old existing deck and replace it with new Trex composite deck. We would supply all materials and builder supplies labor. Labor includes removing all existing decking and stairs and rails and built-in bench, then inspecting and determining what parts of the frame need replaced and strengthened, and extending the east side of the deck by 3 feet to line up with the west side and form a more rectangular deck in the approximate size of 16 x 24‘. We want deck to be level, square, strong, even. Also maybe removing bushes by deck (separate quote).

T-Ice heard all this twice and offered to do deck for $8500 labor only. He added he would include bush removal at no charge.. I told him we wanted most of the roots removed so we could replant and didn’t want any heavy equipment used that could damage our soft lawn. Signed contract after details like meet local building codes, Trex guidelines, complete project in 2-3 weeks incl. picture frame, cocktail rail, hinged door below, deck lighting installation and more. He agreed to remove bushes for no extra charge and without heavy equipment that could damage lawn.

Breached contract by failing to complete in time and then quit. He damaged joists by ripping deck boards out w/out unscrewing screws, damaged lawn with prohibited equipment, intended to violate cantilever building code and wouldn’t listen to concerns. He had asked for and received second 25% check , then stopped coming. He only removed about 75% of old top deck & QUIT after 24 days (breach of contract) w/out even starting any of the time-consuming work on frame or new $8K composite deck, rails or stairs and kept all our money. Criminal!

I cut his bushes down left a little bit sticking up so when I did that in a punch out time at the end we clean it all up at the end I cut a step down handrail the decking and all that before I was supposed to be there I told him I had 3 decks and interior trim ahead of him and he wanted to have done before I could get to it and I went and did somethings .then he got upset and said he needed it done then and then i told him he didn't have the material delivered yet and i have other jobs to do first. I let him use my walk pank to put down some gravel under the deck and i told him leave it behind the wall on the deck and didn't do that he put it in his garage and has given it back. He gave me 25% down to do the contract and 25% after i start the job.So now he wants it all back but $800.00. He told me that we only work there for 15 hrs of work. I told him its my time and i people's time plus my truck, trailer, insurance, tools, equipment. Then he told me that i destroyed he's joists that it had holes in the top of the joists and they were all messed up. I told him that i didn't build the deck and you have to have holes in the top of the joists for nails or screws.ticecarpentryworks

Then he told me that the cantilever joists could not be more then 3 feet and i told him but when you sister joists that means its a double joists so you can go whatever ever you do you have go back double the distance of what you do and i told him call the inspector and he would agree. Then he told me that we would be wrong and then i told he again to call the inspector and tell him that

He breached contract & kept all our money ($4,250). Contract was for him to rebuild our existing 16’x24’ deck using Trex composite & extend it by 3 feet. For $8500 (labor only) he would remove existing deck, strengthen 25yr old frame (replace weak wood, add bracing, level & square it up & install Trex deck/rails/stairs/concrete & lighting (I purchased myself). Contract required him to follow my design, Trex guidelines, building code, careful measuring & spacing, installing skirting & access door below, perimeter animal barrier, & LED lighting. Completion was required within 2 weeks. He later said he had a couple of days in March he wouldn’t be able to work on it. I said ok I just don’t want this dragging on for more than 3 weeks. After very little work (i.e., 10 hrs only removing some of old deck) the first THREE weeks but collecting $4250, he stopped coming & responding. Long story short, he should’ve completed existing deck removal & do the frame work in the first week as I was ordering Trex which was to arrive in 2 weeks. He never showed up in Wk 3. I insisted on a completion date & some evidence his 5 foot cantilever plan to extend deck would meet code (I knew it didn’t). The old deck had a 2’ cantilever and he planned to extend deck 3 more feet (5’ cantilever). He got defensive & quit (I have proof it wouldn’t meet code). I told him he could keep $800 for his few hours of work & to cover fuel expenses, etc (he only lives 2 miles from us). He cussed & gave no money back. I signed up for arbitration thru HomeAdvisor (Angie) but he declined & they banned him from their services. We have several other sources stating similar occurrences with him. We will sue him unless BBB does something to make this right. Oh, he also broke a “verbal agreement” & damaged our lawn & refused to apologize or pay for it. Then he damaged our deck frame by ripping old boards off then sawing off remaining screws in joists vs simply unscrewing them! That cost me over $1000.
