Called 12/27/2014 for a replacement gas water heater as the current leased one has bad rusting on the base & was told for it to be replaced I need to sign a 4 year contract even though I have been leasing at least 20 years …. I had been told in the past that the benefits of leasing was should there be an issue with the heater it would be quickly resolved at no expense …. I do not see the need for a contract …asked to speak to a manager & couldn’t…. reluctantly was told , ok no contract…. I finally agreed . After careful consideration and my continued disappointment & extreme aggravation at the lack of customer service, appreciation for my long term of leasing I decided to cancel the service. I was told the removal could take up to 30 days !!…it is now 23 days & heater has not been removed!! Phoning the given number is a total waste of time …. I was informed that I could have it removed my self!!.. obviously at my expense . My repeated requests for removal are ignored.Review from Gary T

I have been with AWHR fir over 10yrs. Have had nothing but problem with them. Had autopsy and one month they took out a payment, the next two months nothing, then the next week after that they took out three payments. I canceled autopsy. Then I couldn't make payments online and I called them and they said they were shorthanded, another time couldn't make payments online for six months cause they got a new computer system, and the latest is the past three weeks (2025) cause they were updating their online. Time to find another vendor. Everything I'd call they said they would escalate it up and have a supervisor call me back and have never received a call back from them. Have been waiting for two days to get service on our AWHR water heater which has failed. Their contractor finally called to schedule service FIVE DAYS after our initial call to AWHR. Unacceptable!

Disgusting. We have paid for this service for over 10 years and when we need them they are MIA. They told us a local company would be contacting us within 24 hours and we are on day 5 of no call and no show. We have called every day but Sunday and they told us because we didn’t call Sunday they thought the problem was fixed. They also said they didn’t get our calls on other days when we spoke to someone! The last customer service rep told me that if I wanted to talk with his manager he would not escalate my service request. I reminded them my contract was with them, not the 3rd party they contracted with in my area. They are rude, and it’s like a shell game with them.American Water Heater Rentals Response

I had water leaking from my tank. I called them and they said they would come out that day and if I wasn't home it would be a 85 dollar charge. They never called back and never showed up after I waited home all day. I inherited the water heater not knowing it when I moved in the house 30nyears ago. I want this water heater gone but coming here I see it's gonna be a problem. Also this heater should've been paid off 10 times now.American Water Heater Rentals Response

We pulled the phone call that you had with us, and the agent stated that you would be getting a call from the plumbing company within 24-48 hours. The agent did let you know that they typically call the same day so you might hear from them today. We certainly apologize for the inconvenience that you had due to this misunderstanding. Our agents do not have access to the schedule of the plumbers, so we are not able to set the appointments. The $85 charge only applies if you made an appointment with the plumber, and you are not home when they arrive. We understand and respect that you wish to have the hot water heater removed and that removal has been scheduled.Review from CJ

I have been a customer for 25 years with AWHR. Repairs were always prompt and correct. However when I decided to purchase my own water heater and no longer want the AWHR water heater I cant get them to remove it. I was told it would be removed in 30 days. 30 days came and went and nothing. I have called once a week for the last 7 weeks and been told we will contact the plumber to expedite, we will have mgmt call you, why don't you dispose of it yourself since you want it gone so badly. I explained I'm getting my basement refinished and had to postpone work because its in the way. It is their water heater and they are supposed to dispose of it and my husband is a disabled vet and cant remove a 150 gallon water heater. I am soo mad at AWHR. I recommend anyone in need of a water heater to buy a Rheem marathon, guaranteed for life. Dont bother with AWHR.American Water Heater Rentals Response

I wish I could leave negative stars. My parents purchased a home years ago in WV they planned to retire in. They rented it out in the meantime. At one point, the water heater went out so my father elected to sign up with this company to rent a water heater instead of installing a new one. My father died unexpectedly in January 2023. The house in WV was sold as my mother no longer wanted to retire there, which is completely understandable. Even though she no longer owns the home, and sent the company my father's death certificate, they STILL will not let her out of the contract. They insist she changed it to her name and agreed to pay until 2025. I can attest to you that my father died on 1/4/23 and my mother turned to me on 1/5/23 and said the house needed to go. Trust me when I say, she had NO intention of keeping any part of that house until 2025. The only thing she changed was her name on the account so she could pay the bill. This company is a complete scam and now is basically holding a widow hostage. They should be ashamed of themselves. Their reviews tell you all you need to know. This company is a scam. Be afraid of getting trapped into a payment that will never end. It is impossible to end the service, and they will threaten you will collections when they decide to not end your service... yes you read that correctly. In short, once you sign up be prepared to pay for life over something that isn't that expensive from a store.American Water Heater Rentals Response

Dan E 11/9/2023 I cancelled my account on 3/27/23 after paying AWHR for their service for year. I was told my last charge would be for April 2023 and arrangements made to remove my hot water tank. I contacted AWHR talking to learn my account was still active and I was now billed for May too. I was told my account would be closed and I would receive a refund for May. I contacted AWHR after seeing I was billed for June now and on that call was told I would receive a refund for May and June in 4 to 6 weeks and someone would contact me about removing the tank in a few weeks. It is now the 9th of Nov and I have never received payment for the two extra months I was billed and the tank is still in my basement. In short, AWHR were good at getting there monthly payments off of me and they are terrible at keeping their word! Rather than call Customer Service again, I will make my complaint here. I have noticed at least AWHR seems to reply to these comments. I hope they will do what they promised me 5 months ago!American Water Heater Rentals Response

Terrible service. I sold my house and they want to force the new owner to transfer the account under their name because they don’t want to pick it up. They give you all the excuses possible. They can’t even tell me what needs to be done straight out. Everything they tell me is with possible or maybe, all I need is for them to cancel the account and pick up the dryer. First they said they needed permission for access to pick it up and now They have access and permission to pick it up. But they came out now with no they need to transfer it under there name and then request to pick it up. This company is a scamAmerican Water Heater Rentals Response
