****PREDATORY PRACTICES BEWARE****On 7/28 A1 Air was called to my home because my home was not cooling. The tech gave us three options. 1) Charge the unit with freon at $169 at pound. I was told the unit was down to four (4) pounds and I need six (6) pounds to run at optimal levels. 2) Pay $3600 for a leak detection. 3) Replace the entire unit for 10k-30k. It's a 2017 ********* 4 ton unit. I was told if I opted for the freon, it could last me till next summer when I could replace the whole unit. Now my daughter is medically fragile and I was advised ***** is the easiest and fastest way to fix it.I don't have any HVAC experience, I trusted A1 to exercise their due diligence in the manner.Come 8/4, the house is no longer cooling AGAIN. This didn't sit right with me. I called in a second opinion and within 15 minutes of being on site, he found it was catastrophic evaporator leak. HE HEARD IT without using a freon detector. Me, not having any HVAC experience, heard this leak with MY own ears. The second opinion asked if he even went in to the attic because how did he fill with the unit with ***** and not hear it? I confirmed A1 did go in to the attic multiple times but have no idea what they did. Are A1 techs advised to ignore active leaks unless A1 is paid $3600 for leak detection? This is negligent and predatory. After finding out this information I did a little more research on freon. A1 air is charging $169 a pound, I called a couple DFW HVAC repairmen. The lowest I found was $60 a pound, highest was $90 a pound. I will go with highest for arguments sake, that's an 87% mark up. Leak detection was $120, now I know a few things will go in to leak detection but I was alluded to A1 price starts at $3600 and only goes up. My evaporator coil replacement today for parts labor and install PLUS freon was $1700.A1 is price gouging, this predatory business practices.
