I was visiting South Padre Island, in town for a national lifeguard competition. There are hundreds of lifeguards from around the country visiting the island, supporting the economy and this picturesque area. I stopped in for a coffee and muffin and sat down to enjoy my breakfast and was immediately BERATED and HARRASSED by the owner. I believe he was triggered by the fact he thought I was from California. He barked at me that those coming to Texas from California "must learn to show respect to Texas and the values that keep Texas free." The man was wearing a MAGA cap and derogatory t-shirt and would not stop harassing me, even when I asked him to allow me to enjoy my breakfast in peace. I told him at one point I was done with the conversation and that he needed to stop and he screamed at me that he has a right to free speech. At that point I simply stopped talking at all. I was dumbfounded! His tirade continued as I silently waited for the refund I had demanded. I am a quiet person who tends to stick to herself, I don't share any political beliefs publicly and I have never seen or experienced ANYTHING like this! He was incorrigible and simply wouldn't stop haranguing a customer who had just spent money at his establishment, simply wanting her morning cup of joe. I am still in shock. The experience was bad enough that I will never visit South Padre Island again.
