On 6/28/2023 my adult daughter took a four-minute (less than one mile) ambulance ride to the ************* for a dislocated knee. On a positive note, the ambulance EMTs were excellent taking her down a steep set of stairs on a stretcher while she was in excruciating pain and they did their job well. Then things went bad: In August 2023, my daughter started getting harassed by a collection agency for payment of $2,764. I paid the bill in full because the collection agency was relentless and aggressive and promised me that I would get reimbursed by my health insurance directly rather than risk having my credit record tarnished. I regret having been strong-armed by the collection agency. I NEVER should have paid them out of my pocket (but I did).Turns out that the ambulance company ("provider") billed my insurance company under the WRONG patient name. They billed under my name as the patient rather than my daughter's name. So, my insurance company is asking for the provider to correct this error and resubmit and the provider has not cooperated. This has been going on for over ONE YEAR. I have spent hours and hours on the telephone with the provider's (overseas) billing department and they are some of the rudest, most unprofessional, unhelpful people I have ever dealt with. I can't even get them to submit an invoice. In fact, I don't believe they ever even billed us, it went straight to a collections notice. The "billing department" refuses to give phone numbers or names for follow-up, they have strung us along for months by saying it will be corrected "in two weeks" and we will see a resubmitted claim. None of this has happened and the latest is that I've requested a billing statement/invoice so I can get some assistance from my health insurance **** and that's not even something that they can do expediently. I was given "in 7 - 10 days" you'll get the statement in the mail excuse. It's not just exasperating, it's wrong, unethical, and fails the smell test.Business response

I am rejecting this response because:
In order to reimburse me for this out of pocket expense, my insurance provider needs to see proof of payment for the original transport service. So, even though McCormick/Ambulance did send a new invoice under the CORRECT patient name (my daughter) it doesn't indicate anywhere that the account balance is zero because I've paid them in full already.
I need this documentation to provide evidence that I have paid this original transport bill. When I have spoken on the phone with the customer service people at ********************** billing, they give a verbal "zero balance" statement but won't back it up with written documentation.

Harrassment by ambulance company. Received a bill for about $650 in which this was supposed to be sent to the insurance company. The insurance company resolved this and spoke with McCormick ambulance on 8/5/24 to settle this because they require ***** days to process claims. The bill arrived on 8/5/24 and within the week, I've received a half dozen texts, letters, emails for payment (a week after the bill arrived) and threatening to send it to collections (within 1 week of receiving the bill). I've never experienced this from any company.Business response

I paid a bill with this service 2 years ago and every year they send it to a collection agency that claims I did not pay the bill. They keep trying to get me to pay them repeatedly for a service I already paid them for. This is the 3rd year in a row they have tried to pull this on me. The first couple times they tried to bill me thousands of dollars without running my insurance, that went on for like 2 years. Now they are claiming that my bank refused payment a year ago and they are back again without contacting me at all over the last year. The collections agency they sent it to this time is Creedence. I want this to stop it has been going on for years now.Initial Complaint

On Jun 2nd, 2023, my daughter, ***************************** (the account is in her name as she had just turned 18, she has authorized me to take care of this) was taken by ambulance from Universal Studios to ****************************. We only had an accidental policy at the time, who deemed the services were not covered. Since then, we have received multiple invoices through mail and email requesting payment. The initial invoice was sent in the mail during the summer, and I gave them the insurance info at that time. I was told if the insurance didn't cover it, they would send another bill. I started receiving emails on Nov 24, 2023 requesting payment - I thought it was a scam at that time, as I received an email every 5 days and hadn't gotten anything in the mail. I finally did receive an invoice in the mail around Dec 19th. That is when I called about making arrangements to pay and was told I could make payments over time, or I could pay in full and receive a discounted price. I decided to pay in full to receive the discount and did so online on Dec 22, 2023. I was told that I was just to put in the discounted price and the rest would be written off. After doing this I continued to receive letters and emails stating that I was past due and owed the amount that was supposed to be discounted. I have called the company and they assured me that the account was zeroed out, but since that call I have received another mailing requesting payment of the discounted amount. I do not owe any money at this time as I paid the discounted amount I was told over the phone.Business response

Ive been receiving constant texts and emails about an ambulance trip over a year ago that this business has refused to work with my insurance on. Every time I call my insurance, they tell me that the handling of this is very abnormal and that the ambulance company is refusing to work with their adjustment. The insurance has firmly stated that the *** I would owe is just over $800. Instead, McCormick Ambulance is now telling me I owe $2700 and instead of following up with me (after declining once again to work with my insurance) I get a call from collections?? McCormick Ambulance said theyve filed to get it back from collections but continue to refuse working with my insurance and several weeks later, its still stuck in collections. Now they say pay it all at once or else. Additionally, my insurance claims that they are unable to get through when they call McCormick Ambulance. Strong arming people into paying the full amount or making it hit your credit, while refusing to work with insurance and lying about it is bad business.Business response

In July 7th of 2022 my wife was injured and in extreme pain. I called 911 who sent firemen, paramedics and a McCormick ambulance - I did not choose McCormick, the 911 dispatcher did. What a nightmare that decision has been.In December of 2022, after our insurance company processed the claim (in which they determined the patients portion of cost was $125.63), we received a bill from McCormick for $2050.31 (Bill ID ***************! When I called the insurance company, they said they would talk to McCormick and they advised not to pay any more than their claim stated was the patients portion. My insurance, Cigna, told me that McCormick would hold the payment due until review happened, and mentioned that McCormick is out of network. I asked how that can be? I didnt choose this vendor, 911 did, and if it was really an urgent emergency would anyone really ask for another ambulance service?!? My understanding today, that I was informed of by ***** insurance, was that as of January 1st 2022, federal law prohibits such out-of-network charges for emergencies, and must charge based on the in-network pricing.A month later, another bill for $2050.31 and another call to Cigna. They were still negotiatinga month later the sameand the next month as well (Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr). Then, last week, 2+ months since I last heard from Cigna or McCormick, another bill for $2050.31 (Bill ID ***************. Ridiculous! We are willing to pay the amount our insurance says we should pay, but please, McCormick, stop sending these $2050.31 bills and negotiate in good faith with *****. I have attached images of the bill and the *** from Cigna.Business response

BBB Case number: 20288457
Dear Better Business Bureau:
Thank you for taking the time to contact our office with the consumers concerns. American Medical Response (AMR) values our customers and strives to provide quality service.
Our office has thoroughly researched the consumers concerns regarding the ********** balance billing law. Per our review, this law does not apply to ambulance companies because Health and Safety Code Section ****** authorizes ambulance providers to balance bill. The AB72 law deals specifically with professionals who perform services within a facility or a noncontracting individual health professional which does not include Ambulance providers. Unfortunately, AMR is not contracted with the consumers insurance carrier in the area services were rendered. As a result, the claim was processed based on non-contractual benefits and the consumer is responsible for any unpaid balance. An appeal was filed to the consumers insurance carrier due to the claim was underpaid, however the appeal was upheld. At this time, the consumer remains responsible for balance due.
If the consumer would like to discuss payment options or inquire about our financial assistance program, please contact our customer service department at **************.

I am rejecting this response because as a consumer my wife was not permitted the option to select an in-network ambulance service for her emergency. As stated earlier, the 911 operator dispatched the service.
We find it incredibly unfair to be on the hook for out-of-network costs related to emergency services. I also have been told that despite a number of attempts to negotiate the costs in good faith between ***** and McCormick, McCormick would not budge. We continue to willingly offer to pay a fair amount for services typically charged by other providers in our area of service, but while those costs are typically less than $200, McCormick insists on asking us to pay $2000+.
I would request McCormick consider the nature of this emergency call, the lack of provider choice that was provided during this emergency, and reconsider their charges in light of that information. If not our next step will be to file a claim with the no surprises federal agency to protest such charges.

RE: Ambulance Transport
BBB Case number: 20288457
Dear Better Business Bureau:
Thank you for taking the time to contact our office with the consumers concerns. American Medical Response (AMR) values our customers and strives to provide quality service.
AMR was dispatched through the 911 system and provided appropriate care and transportation for the consumer based on her condition. The charges invoiced for this transport are valid for the level of service provided. Rates for 911 calls are regulated by the local municipality.
As previously referenced, AMR is not contracted with the consumers insurance carrier in the area services were rendered. As a result, the claim was processed based on non-contractual benefits and the consumer is responsible for any unpaid balance. AMR can offer a 20% prompt-pay discount as a courtesy, on the remaining balance due. This would lower the total current balance of $2,050.31 to $1,640.25 if paid within 30 days.
Should the consumer be interested in setting this option up, I may be reached directly at **************

I am rejecting this response because:
I received a newly re-processed claim from Cigna also dated on July 28th, 2023, in which it states that a new discount was ACCEPTED by the health care provider (McCormick, see attached screen shots) with the sentence, "The health care provider AGREED TO ACCEPT the allowable amount, so you SHOULD NOT owe this amount."
This was done for the "Emergency ambulance service with advanced life support" charge, which the $1619.24 discount was accepted on a $2710 charge, and a $48.72 discount applied for the "Ambulance transportation services, per mile" charge billed at $161.
There was also a charge of $31.10 not covered by *****, as they state it was included in the Ambulance service charge, and I should also not be charged for this amount.
Based on this newly processed Cigna claim, and the comment made by Cigna that McCormick accepted the Cigna discount amounts, I believe I should only owe $120.33 which I will be happy to pay when we receive a new billing statement from McCormick. If this is accurate, I want to thank McCormick for accepting the Cigna discounts, and I will then close this with an acceptable outcome.
PS: McCormick sent another bill in the amount of $2050.31 to my house on July 19th, 2023.

Our office has thoroughly reviewed the consumers concerns. AMR is not contracted with the consumers insurance carrier and did not agree to accept the contractual discount that is on the consumers Explanation of Benefits. I am rejecting this response because
The insurance provider (Cigna) has informed me that they have documentation that AMR agreed to accept the discount of services as per negotiations, resulting in a much lower amount being now due (~$120), which we are more than happy to pay.
Despite this agreement, AMR continues to bill me an amount in excess of what is stated in my EOB (currently about $1806, after a revised EOB was processed as a result of discussions between Cigna and AMR on July 31st, 2023.
I sent all copies of EOBs, that make mention of this agreement, to the mailing address AMR provided in their billing envelope.
I will contact Cigna again on Monday (as I am out of town) and will have them contact AMR again, and I have asked that the documents Cigna possesses, that show the agreement on pricing between ***** and AMR, be forwarded to our personal attorney as well, in the event it may be needed as evidence in a small claims court.Regards, ******* & Hsiang-mei

I am rejecting this response until I speak to my insurance provider, who stated that I am not responsible for anything more than the negotiated and agreed amount. I will obtain a copy of documentation that was the basis for the agreement that they informed me they made with ***, and will attach that in a followup on this site, as well as directly to the *** company. My insurance has not issued a correction or removed any statements regarding *** accepting the discounted amount, and until that happens I will continue to dispute this ridiculous abuse of assigning out-of-network ambulance services to an emergency medical event, only to get shocked with a bill more almost 20x the expected amount for reasonable ambulance service costs.

My son and I were transported to the hospital. A full 51 weeks later we received 2 bills in the mail. I called WestMed McCormick Ambulance to provide my insurance information for them to submit the claim. 2 months later I received the same two bills in the mail again saying insurance denied because it was past the 12 month filing period. Called McCormick and they told me I had to take it up with insurance. I requested insurance to review and reprocess the claim. Denied again because it was filed too late. I am done dealing with this situation. I will not pay two $2,700 bills for the same ambulance ride because McCormick failed to bill on time. How is it possible for a company to be almost a full year late on their billing??? And then to pass their negligence off as if it's my responsibility now? No.Business response
